Description
This version of my two sparrows was cast as a second sculpture to utilize a cutting from the base of a large amethyst geode that I used for another sculpture.
The birds and twig are cast as a single unit of 840 grams of silicon bronze. The twig was given a liver of sulphur patina and the birds were given a heat patina to enhance their colour. As the heat patina did not show the purples and blues as I hoped I applied a light ferric nitrate brown colour to the bronze.
The piece was originally planned to be set on walnut. However, this was changed to a translucent onyx base. The onyx provides a smaller height that better suits the slim amethyst slab.
The amethyst crystals in the cavity remind me of a natural water basin from which the small birds might drink. The amethyst slab is polished and pinned to the onyx base.
