Sparrows 1

I recently thought to create another sculpture in my amethyst and bronze series of work. This sculpture portrays two small birds sitting on a twig.

I have chosen to set the work on residue amethyst I cut from the geode used for my Encased sculpture with the bronze stallion. This cut amethyst has a crystal depression that I think of as a water basin.

The cut amethyst is polished. The walnut base was fashioned from the scraps remaining from the 4 foot tall 2 inch slab of black walnut I purchased previously. It is not yet finished.

A three part mold of the birds was made from urethane rubber. The molding of complex three dimensional structures is not always easy. The mold must be planned to manage undercut areas or other places where demolding of the wax part might be compromised.

In this case one difficult area that was hard for a standard two part mold was the tail and twig area for the upper bird. Now that the birds are in wax they can be refined and prepared for casting in bronze.

I also have another amethyst geode that has been waiting for the right bronze sculpture for a number of years. It just so happens that these birds are ideal for this amethyst piece. I expect to create two different, absolutely unique sculptures with these birds.
